The aim of the unit is to give students a thorough grounding in the methods, strategies and reagents employed in modern organic synthesis.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying this unit students should be able to:
* Describe reagent systems to effect a wide range of simple transformation
* Appreciate why organoelement chemistry is used in synthesis
* Understand the mechanisms of palladium catalysed reactions
* Evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of novel synthetic transformations
* Describe fully the mechanism of these reactions
* Apply the information learned to solve unseen problems in organoelement chemistry selected from contemporary research literature.

The unit focuses on the development and application of a range of elements in organic synthesis. Organoboron chemistry. Organosilicon chemistry. Organophosphorus chemistry. Organosulphur chemistry. Palladium catalysed cross-coupling reactions and carbonylations. The Heck reaction and isomerisation. Palladium catalysed allylic substitution and trimethylenemethane chemistry. Tandem and cascade reactions catalysed by palladium.
