Description: | Aims: To introduce the students of procedures for establishing mathematical models of engineering systems. To introduce commercial software packages for the solution of the mathematical models and to examine the relative merits of different approaches. To enhance technical report writing skills. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit students will be able to: * Make the realistic judgements necessary to develop mathematical models of complex engineering systems. * Undertake a critical appraisal of the simulation results and to have an appreciation of the limitations imposed by the assumptions made and the method of solution adopted. Apply commercial software packages for the prediction of engineering systems performance. * Assess the reliability of the results in the presence of modelling uncertainty and parameter variations. Skills: Problem solving; IT; written communication; numeracy; working independently. Content: Role of simulation in design. Analysis of dynamic systems in the time domain and frequency domain. Linearisation methods. Modelling of discontinuities and non-linearities. Visual Basic, Simulink and Matlab modelling. |
