The aim of the Unit is to provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of how drugs are designed and discovered, with a particular focus on molecular and structural aspects.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing the Unit, a student should be able to:
1. Recognise the different approaches to drug discovery and grasp the importance of each approach.
2. Distinguish the different types of rationally designed inhibitors of enzymes.
3. Use simple structure-activity relationship (SAR) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) methods in rationalising data.

Content:
1. Classical SAR and QSAR
2. Selection of target for drug design and drug design based on knowledge of the structure of the target
3. Inhibition of enzyme activity
4. Affinity labelling
5. Examples of structure-based drug design
6. Combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening
7. Design of drugs to modulate signalling pathways
8. Structure-based molecular modelling.
