Description: | Aims: To introduce the techniques available for determining the structure and function of cellular components and processes, to describe the structure and function of cells and cell organelles and to show the diversity of cells. Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to: * describe the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; * describe the structure and explain the function of cell organelles; * make comparisons between related structures and functions; * critically appraise methods available to determine the nature and function of cellular processes; * describe and explain the dynamic nature of cell behaviour. Skills: Learning and studying T/F/A, Written communication T/F/A, Information technology T/F, Information handling & retrieval T/F/A, Working independently T/F. Content: Introduction: eucarya, eubacteria and archaea; microscopical techniques; cytochemistry; cell fractionation and autoradiography. The structure and function of cell membranes, plant walls, intercellular channels. Cellular processes such as cell signalling, cytoskeleton and cell movement, secretion and absorption. Organelles involved in energy metabolism: chloroplasts and mitochondria, plant microbodies. Nucleus, chromosomes, cell growth and proliferation, mitosis and meiosis. |
