Description: | Aims: The unit aims to support students in developing their ability to manipulate data and produce software outputs that are appropriate to meeting a business requirement and which can be used in future by other in the same organisational setting. Understanding of content from other units on their programme will be reinforced as students gain the ability to implement ideas and techniques from those units in software. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students will have: * acquired competence in a set of advanced features of commonly-used software applications. * developed an understanding of the uses to which these applications can be put in business. Skills: Intellectual - translation of problem requirements to implemented solutions (facilitated and assessed); understanding of software applications in business (taught). Practical - ability to use common software packages at an advanced or "power-user" level (taught, facilitated and assessed). Key skills - use of Information Technology (taught, facilitated and assessed); evaluation of own production (assessed). Content: The unit is essentially practical in orientation and is based around a series of practical classes and workshops. Lectures are used to set the business and technology context surrounding the use of the software in organisational life. The exercises used will develop competencies in software applications which are commonly used in business. Students will also be expected to understand the uses to which those software applications can be put in organisations. Relevant applications of software will vary as the technology changes, but a representative sample would include: * Spreadsheets: built-in functions; manipulation of data using complex functions and pivot tables; optimisation; use of statistical functions; use of financial functions; developing user-created functions using Visual Basic for Applications (including user interfaces, conditional statements, loops and programming logic). |
