Description: | Aims: The intention of this unit is: * To define and introduce creativity across a variety of contexts and perspectives: individual creativity, group creativity, creativity in business, science, arts and in education * To introduce the tools, theories, and methodologies to investigate the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural mechanisms underlying creativity * To introduce the tools, theories, and methodologies to investigate the consequences of creativity to individuals, groups, schools and organizations * To develop a critical awareness of the scientific theories and findings on creativity, and to empower students to distinguish between scientific and unscientific knowledge about this topic * To develop students' awareness of the practical recommendations on how to foster and implement creativity in individuals, groups, schools and organizations Learning Outcomes: In completing this unit students would be expected to: * Critically evaluate the main theoretical and empirical work conducted in the field of psychology of creativity * Appraise methodology within the field and be able to evaluate the validity and robustness of multiple methodologies * Formulate new hypotheses and/or theories within thie field of study * Apply understanding to plans regarding how to design and conduct studies in the field of psychology of creativity * Critically apply scientific knowledge and develop recommendations on how to foster creativity in individuals, groups, schools and organizations * Formulate ideas as to how creativity can be trained and measured in applied settings * Identify the barriers that exist to fostering and implementing creativity across a variety of contexts Skills: * Comprehensive and scholarly written communication (e.g. essays) (T/F/A) * Concise, time-bound and effective written communication (e.g. briefings / exams) (T/F/A) * Ability to select, summarise and synthesis written information from multiple sources (T/A) * Ability to develop rigorous arguments through precise use of concepts and models (T/A) * Ability to apply theory into practice (T/A) * Ability to select and use appropriate ideas to produce a coherent response to a pre-set question (T/A) * Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines (T) * Ability to work independently, without close supervision of guidance (T/A) Content: The unit will explore a series of key questions, including: * What is creativity and why should we care about it[GG1] ? * How can we measure and study creativity scientifically? * What factors stimulate individual creativity? * What factors stimulate group creativity? * What type of leadership stimulates creativity? * How can we train and select creative talent? * What are the barriers to implementing creativity in schools and organizations? * What are the current directions in creativity research? |
