To set the students a chemical engineering design challenge, that they will research, plan, conduct and complete at undergraduate Honours level. To give the students experience of working as a member of a small project group (3-6 students), and then as an individual on an allocated unit design. To provide additional lectures on a number of supporting topics that are relevant to the design challenge set (e.g. legislation governing the environment; genetically modified organisms; the properties and uses of materials).

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to show that:
a) they are capable of conducting research on a design theme, and acquiring and critically reviewing relevant technical information;
b) they are capable of developing an integral systems approach to chemical engineering and of applying the principles of chemical and/or biochemical engineering to the design of a process;
c) they have creative and critical skills, and are able to make choices and decisions in areas of uncertainty;
d) they can work together in a team, and also alone;
e) they can produce a working programme for the project and carry out their design activity according to that programme;
f) they can communicate effectively the results of their work in the form of written reports that include drawings.

These are numerous as Process Design is an opportunity to strengthen most of the skills taught throughout the programme. The highlights include: ability to research information in the literature and to critically review technical information on a design theme; problem solving and data analysis; creative thinking and adaptation of information in the literature on similar processes (although with different chemistry) to a new technology; team work; oral and written communication; application of many of the basic chemical engineering skills (taught in the course) to a design project.

Research component
To perform a critical review of alternative processes; to gather data from the literature on the physical and chemical properties of reactants and products; to gather information on materials of construction; to complete the design project 'warm-up' exercise. To write a report on the findings.
Taught component
Lectures are provided on a number of supporting topics, which are relevant to the design challenge set. Depending on the design themes, these may change from year to year. The following are provided as examples: Introduction to environmental legislation and factors that influence it. Control of liquid discharges and air emissions. Integrated pollution control (IPC). Environmental assessments and statements. Introduction to regulations governing the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Biosafety and containment of GMOs. Introduction to Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) with respect to bioprocess plant. Materials of construction for chemical and bioprocess plant.
Tutorial guidance on how to acquire and review technical information on a chemical engineering subject. Information will cover the background, current status, context and possible future developments of the subject.
Tutorial guidance on how to prepare a professional report.
Design Component
Group Work: Preparation of a technical and economic appraisal of a process where safety, environmental, social, and sustainability issues form an integral part of process screening. Including: market survey; review of alternatives; creation of process flowsheet(s) based on material & energy balances; gathering of relevant physical and chemical property data; safety and operability; capital, operating costs, and discounted cash flow; unit specification sheets; engineering drawings and sketches; executive summary. To write a Group Report on the findings.
Individual Unit Design: Process design calculations. Demonstration of viability. Appliccation of rigorous methods for material, energy & momentum balances. Outline mechanical design. Outline control and PID. To write a report on the findings.
