Description: | Aims: To provide an experience of project execution, management and reporting as close as possible to that likely to be encountered in UK industry. Learning Outcomes: After successful completion of this unit students will be able to: demonstrate a systematic approach to project work and a commitment to attaining the milestones and deliverable that the plan contains, write technical project reports, deliver oral reports, respond confidently to questions arising from their written and oral reports, demonstrate initiative and the willingness to take personal responsibility, demonstrate a critical awareness of the principal problems limiting progress/performance in the technical area of the project, outline the range of technique/solutions currently being brought to bear on these problem, explain the way in which their chosen approach builds on or compliments the current techniques/solutions, make where necessary engineering judgements in the face of incomplete information, demonstrate self-direction in tackling and solving problems. Skills: After successful completion of this unit students will be able to: Analyse complex problems breaking them down into a set of simpler problems which are tractable in the context of the knowledge, synthesise solutions to problems from existing knowledge and understanding, identify and acquire knowledge and understanding directly relevant to the solution of a problem integral to the student's project, author and produce written reports to a technical and literary standard consistent with the normal requirements of UK industry - facilitated and assessed, design and deliver oral reports appropriate to an engineering audience, manage research, design, and/or development projects in an effective and professional way, to operate within the appropriate code of professional conduct, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment. Content: Students complete an individual project. This will be a chosen from a list suggested by the potential supervisors or alternatively students may suggest their own project which is allowed if acceptable to the supervisor and course director. A written Final Report on the project will be submitted in September and a detailed oral presentation of this report will also be made. |
