Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
* Analyse simple structural elements and systems to determine stress, strains, stability and displacements. (K1)
* Assess the appropriateness of a variety of engineering materials and structural systems across different engineering applications. (K2)
* Apply your knowledge and understanding of structural systems and materials in response to design brief to create solutions to engineering problems. (I1,K4)
* Communicate your design process effectively. (PT1)
* Critically reflect upon your personal contribution to teamwork and the effectiveness of design choices. (PT4, PT5)

Synopsis: Develop your physical and analytical understanding of stresses and strains, and of the three-dimensional action of structures, materials and components, typical engineering materials, their properties and their impact upon performance of buildings and structures.

Content: Elastic behaviour of structures;
Section properties, flexural, shear, torsional and principal stresses;
Shear behaviour, composite sections;
Analysis of deflections;
Buckling of column;
Plastic behaviour of simple beam structures; Mechanical properties and physical properties of construction materials;
