Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to:
* Understand fundamental aspects affecting coastal environments and civil engineering works on the coast and offshore.
* Design a range of coastal and offshore structures, including coastal sea defences, harbours, marinas breakwaters and offshore superstructures.
* Apply techniques and methods for protecting and conserving the coast in a sustainable manner.
* Gain knowledge of the latest research and developments into marine renewable energy.

Synopsis: Understand coastal and offshore engineering and how civil engineers can design coastal and offshore structures in a sustainable manner. Find out about the latest research into marine renewable energy and how it can play a part in our future.

Content: Introduction to coastal and offshore engineering, coastal environment, wave mechanics, wave transformations in shallow water, tidal theory, coastal processes, coastal structures, coastal structure failure modes, design waves, port planning and harbour design, latest research and development of marine renewable energy (including offshore wind, wave and tidal energy), offshore construction.
