CH10170: Organic chemistry 1 for visiting students

[Page last updated: 21 April 2022]

Academic Year: 2022/3
Owning Department/School: Department of Chemistry
Credits: 6 [equivalent to 12 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 120
Level: Certificate (FHEQ level 4)
Period:
Semester 1
Assessment Summary: EX 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Exam (EX 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: In taking this module you cannot take CH10135 OR take CH10136
Learning Outcomes: After studying this unit, students should be able to:
* Describe the structure and bonding of simple organic molecules in order to explain their chemical behaviour.
* Apply nomenclature, notation and diagrams to describe structures and reactions.
* To develop a clear understanding of curved arrow notation, equilibriums structures, resonance, single and double electron transfers.
* Apply the methodology of FG interconversions in the synthesis of academically and commercially important target molecules.
* Select appropriate techniques (IR, NMR and UV and mass spectroscopy) to identify organic compounds in a range of situations.
* Solve characterisation problems in organic spectroscopy.

Aims: To introduce the basic concepts upon which the understanding of organic chemistry depends, including structure, bonding and mechanism (arrow pushing) in the context of key reactions of organic chemistry. To build upon these basics to develop the concepts and knowledge essential to a sound understanding of modern organic chemistry, including the characteristic properties of organic functional groups (FGs), their interconversions, and their spectroscopic identification.

Skills: Problem solving (T, F, A); Oral communication (F)

Content: Problem solving (T, F, A); Oral communication (F)
