Contemporary European Studies MA

2 years with Transatlantic Track (Euromasters), starting in September 2023

Gain a broad understanding of the politics, policy and social evolution of Europe and America, and specialist knowledge of the EU and transatlantic affairs.

The Euromasters course offers a distinctive international learning experience, with an opportunity to study at several prestigious institutions in Europe and in the United States.

With an enthusiastic teaching team who are experts in their research fields, and a diverse course of study, this two year master’s degree is internationally recognised.

You'll gain a broad comparative understanding of the European Union, European politics, American politics, policy and social evolution as well as specialist knowledge of key issues in the Euro-Atlantic area and international relations.

We understand that you will want to know more about the shape of the academic year. We work hard and plan for different scenarios, to be able to welcome you to the University of Bath at the start of each semester.

Course structure

This course lasts 2 years. It starts in September 2023 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 25 September 2023.


Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

After the initial core module at the University of Bath you will undertake two taught semesters, followed by the completion of a 15,000 word dissertation to be submitted by September in the second year.

You must study at a minimum of two sites, including the University of Bath; you may also choose to study at a third site.

The units available at each partner study site may vary from year to year. Available units will follow general themes. These are outlined below.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Specialist Module 1

You will complete Specialist Module 1 from January to May 2024 in the United States at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

University of North Carolina units

You'll choose three units examining the United States and European nations within a comparative framework.

Unit choices may vary from year to year. Students have recently studied units such as:

Specialist Module 2

This module allows you to take advantage of core areas of academic expertise at various partner sites. Unit choices may vary from year to year, but each partner site covers general themes of study.

Thesis Module

You will complete your MA in Contemporary European Studies (Euromasters) dissertation from April to September 2025.

You can only complete this at the University of Bath, or the site you study at during Specialist Module 2.

Recognition of professional qualifications


As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

Origin of qualifications

British qualifications

You should have a bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a 2:1 or above.

To apply for this course you should have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate subject such as European Studies, International Relations, Modern Languages, Politics, History, Economics or Sociology.

If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years you completed your degree in the UK you may be exempt from our English language requirements.

Extra costs

If you receive an offer, you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £1,000 when you accept to secure your place. This will be deducted from your tuition fee when you register.

Enrolment fees

Some of our partner institutions have enrolment fees. You will need to pay these directly to the institution when you start your studies there.

The University of North Carolina charge an enrolment fee of around $250 which must be paid at this site. This covers registration, IT and government fees.

Humboldt University of Berlin charge an enrolment fee of around €315 which must be paid for each semester at this site. This includes service fees as well as a seasonal student ticket for public transport (Semesterticket) in and around Berlin for six months.

Visas

You will need to cover the cost of your visa when studying with our partners around the world. The cost of this will vary depending on your nationality, but in previous years our students have reported these can be approximately between £170 and £400 for the duration of the course.
