Specialise in advanced propulsion systems to develop the expertise to make an impact in the future of vehicle engineering.

Our master’s furthers your automotive engineering knowledge and focuses on propulsion systems to prepare you for working in a dynamic and changing industry. You’ll develop systems-thinking approaches to understand the breadth of challenges faced in the sector such as moral, ethical and sustainability issues.

At the start of the course, you’ll be set a topical automotive theme that will feed into group projects, as well as your dissertation. This brings the content of subject-based units to life as well as reflecting professional practice in the industry. It also gives you the benefit of a personalised learning pathway.

You’ll explore the impact of a range of applications and technologies, analysing past failures and predicting future challenges and successes. A mix of theory and technical learning throughout the course allows you to use your analytical skills, innovation and creativity. Your group project and dissertation will also be aligned to the UN’s sustainable development goals so that your learning experience is relevant to the ongoing developments and future of the sector.

To help prepare you to work in an increasingly digital-based industry, you’ll develop specialist skills in modelling, testing and product development. And you’ll learn how simulation and testing go hand-in-hand to enable rapid product development cycles that help us on our way to achieving zero-impact mobility.

To support your research project activities, you'll be able to draw on the staff and facilities of our new Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS).

Course structure

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in October 2024 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 23 September 2024.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. British qualifications

You should have a first or strong second-class Bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent.

To apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, electrical engineering or vehicle engineering.

Develop a range of professional skills and agile research techniques essential for the dynamic nature of the automotive engineering sector. You'll explore and debate topics relating to responsible research and innovation, ethics, diversity, creativity and compassion.

Automotive systems thinking

10 credits

Explore how systems approaches are used in the current and future automotive industry. You'll learn the theory of systems thinking in engineering and apply this in a group project to develop an automotive propulsion system within defined boundaries. You'll also apply testing and verification processes, and effective data presentation in a laboratory session.

Future intelligent vehicle platforms

10 credits

Explore automotive architectures, chassis sub-systems, and their major components. You'll study the function, design, and production approaches for vehicles suited to future infrastructures and communities where sustainable mobility is key. You’ll learn about engineering approaches for analysing the performance characteristics of chassis sub-systems and their components. This will allow you to recognise a range of trade-off options and make informed design decisions.

Industry-linked research project

30 credits

You'll undertake a substantial research or engineering project related to the automotive sector, and responding to the importance of sustainable mobility. You'll work independently under the supervision of a lead supervisor and assessor. The nature of the project may be experimental or simulation.

Propulsion systems engineering in the digital age

5 credits

Explore detailed aspects of propulsion system design and operation and associated sub-system component specifications. You'll use a range of modelling techniques and parameterisation processes for all parts of the propulsion system, involving hardware and software. You'll also gain experience in evaluating and communicating the environmental performance of advanced propulsions systems considering legislative frameworks.

Propulsion systems group project

15 credits

Apply knowledge learnt through your studies so far in a practical group project and develop your engineering technology skills. You'll carry out design and analysis activities as well as practical-based modelling, and laboratory sessions. You'll also experience working in a team on an open-ended problem to develop a solution involving a proposed vehicle system with a propulsion theme.

Research project scoping

5 credits

Review relevant literature and background materials to help you build a project plan to prepare for your dissertation. You'll be given a brief for your individual project and assigned a supervisor to support you as you develop your research proposal.

Towards zero emission propulsion

10 credits

Develop your knowledge of automotive propulsion systems, components, and functionality. You’ll explore holistic approaches to sustainable propulsion technology selection. You'll learn about engineering approaches to analyse the performance of components and full propulsion systems. Furthermore, you’ll study propulsion system trade-off and performance characteristics which account for the impacts of climate change.
