Develop in-depth social science-focused research skills, with an emphasis on advanced-level quantitative data analysis to gain insights from large data sets.
By combining a substantial theoretical and quantitative core with comprehensive computational training, this course will help you gain the essential skills to become a working social science researcher.
You’ll enhance your understanding of the techniques used to design, generate, analyse and present quantitative data in a social science context. This will allow you to apply key research approaches to large scale data sets in public and commercial life and draw actionable conclusions.
A key element of your studies will be to identify and investigate your own original research question using advanced quantitative methods.
This course’s overall blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application will prepare you for doctoral-level study or a variety of research-based roles.
Gain key skills
Upon successful completion this course, you will have:
- demonstratable skills in experimental and quasi-experimental research methods, such as designing and analysing studies that support causal inference
- knowledge of advanced modelling techniques suitable for building and critiquing complex statistical models
- a rounded skillset in mathematics and programming, including optimisation and computational skills suited to data analysis
- an awareness and appreciation of ethical collection and analysis of digital data
- transferable skills suited to professional and academic environments, including critical thinking and analysis, networking and presenting, and advanced bibliographic abilities
You’ll also get hands-on practice with statistical programming within the course's core units and be able to access University-supported software and short courses.
You’ll have access to industry-standard statistical programming software in our computer labs, including Stata, R and Python.
Why choose a Master of Research (MRes) degree?
An MRes is a master’s degree with a focus on research. The knowledge and expertise you’ll gain will prepare you for doctoral study and a range of non-academic careers that require strong research skills.
Find out more about why an MRes might be right for you.
South West Doctoral Training Partnership
This MRes is recognised by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP). It can be taken as a course in its own right, or if you hold an SWDTP studentship you can take the 1+3 (MRes + PhD) pathway.
If you wish to be considered for a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, then you must apply for your preferred PhD route and not the stand-alone MRes. You should follow our how to apply guidelines.
For those holding a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, progression from the MRes to the MPhil or PhD stage is dependent on an acceptable level of achievement.

Learn from experts in their field
You’ll work with experts in social science research. Their passion, knowledge and research shape their teaching to enhance your learning experience.
Graduate prospects
There is increasing demand for high-level quantitative skills from a wide range of private and public sector recruiters.
Many organisations and government departments are now committed to data-driven decision-making, making the ability to extract evidence-based insights important.
This course will equip you with a hybrid skill set that combines quantitative, computing and analytical skills with an understanding of social science research and enquiry.
You’ll also develop practical skills needed for a wide range of careers in social science. These include project and data management, ethical decision-making, and effective collaboration across disciplines.
The MRes also provides an excellent foundation for those who wish to progress to doctoral study and pursue an academic research career.
