Dissertation or consultancy project

The course culminates with either a traditional dissertation or a consultancy project.

The consultancy project is a practical alternative to a dissertation. You’ll work on a project with an external organisation, helping them to address a real-world business challenge. You’ll conduct appropriate research and data analysis (if necessary), before presenting your findings as a written report and presentation.

Consultancy project numbers are limited each year. You’ll apply for a suitable project with one of our external partners and will receive support from us during this process. If a suitable project can’t be secured, you will complete a dissertation instead.

Some of our recent economics master's students have completed their projects with:

  • Currie & Brown
  • Emerging Markets Investment Management
  • Fathom Consulting
  • Oxquant

"Oxquant has collaborated successfully on industry projects with the University of Bath for nearly five years, on project topics such as private equity performance measurement, healthtech and biodiversity compliance. We continue to be impressed with the quality of the University’s students in terms of academic training and commercial awareness." — Dr Richard Saldanha, Oxquant, Founder/Co-Head

Advanced economic theory

10 credits

Learn how to develop logical and rigorous economic arguments and use mathematical techniques to construct and interpret economic models.

This unit is split into two parts:

  • Micro: focus on rational choice theory and behavioural deviations, including bounded rationality, limited attention, and stochastic decision making
  • Macro: focus on models of monetary policy, including discretion vs. commitment, bounded rationality, and challenges posed by the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates

Assessment detail

  • In person unseen examination (Closed-book written examination 100%)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the unit, students should be able to:
develop logically rigorous economic arguments and use mathematical techniques to construct and interpret formal models;
apply models of rational choice under certainty and risk, including expected utility and prospect theory, to individual decision problems;
analyse and compare standard auction formats and evaluate their performance in real-world applications such as online and keyword auctions;
formulate and solve basic New Keynesian models to study monetary policy design under rational expectations and bounded rationality;
assess how optimal monetary policy is different under discretion than under commitment and how the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates affects monetary policy and macroeconomic dynamics;
read and critically assess advanced research papers in microeconomic theory, behavioural economics and modern macroeconomics.

Unit detail

Microeconomic topics may include: rational choice theory; expected utility, the Allais paradox and prospect theory; behavioural economics and applications; auction theory and standard auction formats; VCG mechanisms; applications to online and keyword auctions. Macroeconomic topics may include: the basic New Keynesian model; design of monetary policy rules; monetary policy trade-offs under discretion and commitment; solving New Keynesian models under rational expectations and adaptive learning; bounded rationality and expectational stability; the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates and its implications for monetary policy.

Behavioural economics

5 credits

Study how to develop models that are motivated by empirical evidence of individual behaviour rather than assumptions about rationality.

You'll gain a critical appreciation of the theoretical tools used in these relatively new but increasingly important areas of economics. This unit will help you to develop skills that you can use in a variety of applied economic contexts.

Assessment detail

  • 2 hours, closed book exam (Closed-book written examination 100%)

Learning outcomes

  • A knowledge and understanding of strengths and weaknesses of the "rational actor" framework used in economics.
  • An understanding of behavioural models and associated mathematical techniques, along with applications and policy implications of those models.
  • Research and investigative skills such as problem framing and solving and the ability to assemble and evaluate complex evidence and arguments.

Unit detail

Decision making under uncertainty including prospect theory, intertemporal choice, bounded rationality, behavioural game theory, utility and happiness, economic experiments

Consultancy project

30 credits

The consultancy project will allow you to apply your skills to a project with one of our partner organisations.

Your project will focus on a theoretical or empirical topic within economics or finance. You'll do this under the guidance of academic and company supervisors.

Through your other units, you'll learn how to engage with academic literature in a systematic manner. This will give you the skills to plan, undertake, and evaluate your own project.

Assessment detail

  • Masters Consultancy Project (Practical 80%)

Learning outcomes

  • Ability to develop rigorous arguments through precise use of concepts in Economics or Finance.
  • Ability to use academic literature and apply theoretical methodologies and research skills alongside practice-based economic and business cases.
  • Ability to select, analyse and present numerical data using econometric packages.
  • Capability to handle complex data sets.
  • Ability to select, summarise and synthesise written information from multiple sources.
  • Comprehensive and scholarly written communication. Effective oral communication (e.g. supervisor questions and answers).
  • Ability to formulate a research question, then develop and present an original and coherent answer.
  • Ability to engage with organisations.
  • Ability to select and present material according to objectives and audience.
  • Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently.

Unit detail

The unit will teach students the essential steps of the research process and will require them to apply the skills, concepts, and techniques acquired in the taught programme to a practice-based economic, business, or technical case study provided by one of our partner employers. The unit is organised around classes during the taught stages of the programme, as well as work on their practice track project during the summer period under regular supervision sessions with company and academic supervisors. In these meetings the student will receive guidance on how to undertake research and how to write a project report, as well as on particular outputs the company expects them to produce during the project. The supervisors will review progress and will respond to research initiatives shown by the student.

Econometrics

10 credits

Work with real world economic data and learn about the various ways it can be used to explore relationships between economic variables.

You'll develop knowledge of methods that can be applied to data from experiments, as well as data drawn from the economy without the intervention of an experiment (observational data).

Assessment detail

  • Econometrics project (Report Group 35%)
  • Closed-book written examination (Closed-book written examination 65%)

Learning outcomes

  • Understanding of:
    • The properties of linear OLS regression.
    • The implementation and interpretation of statistical tests.

Economics of banking and financial institutions

5 credits

Learn about the economics of financial intermediation, with a focus on banking.

You'll explore market frictions and the fundamental roles of financial institutions and markets that address them. Throughout the unit, you'll give special attention to:

  • banks and their special features (such as financial stability, risk shifting and competition, regulation)
  • financing techniques (including securitisation)

You'll also study the changing roles of these topics in financial intermediation.

Assessment detail

  • Oral presentation Group (Oral presentation Group 30%)
  • Closed-book written examination (Closed-book written examination 70%)

Learning outcomes

Identify key functions of banks and other financial institutions and contrast their role and mission to that of capital markets.
Develop a solid understanding of the fundamental theories that relate key functions of intermediaries to bank fragility and financial stability.
Critically assess and advise policy on regulatory measures and proposals.
Master a set of analytical tools and formally analyse problems related to asymmetric information, financial contracts, competition, etc.
Develop and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the 2007-2008 global financial crisis through the application of the theories discussed in the lectures and seminars.

Unit detail

The course starts by introducing market frictions prevalent in the financial system (e.g. asymmetric information) and discusses how intermediation can address them.
Students will develop a solid understanding of the fundamental roles of, and also the relationship between, financial markets and institutions, and learn about to what extent markets and institutions are complements and/or substitutes in intermediation.
A large part of the course is dedicated to banking and its special features. We will talk about inter alia the transformation of the banking business as well as industry, the relationship between bank competition and risk shifting, financial stability, bank regulation, and will also discuss in detail important developments in bank financing techniques, such as securitisation.
The unit builds on the analysis of strategic firm behaviour with the aim to understand the structure and basic operation of financial intermediation in general and banking in particular.
The analytical framework is introduced and critically discussed in lectures. Then students are required to apply these formal concepts to a range of problems in seminars. Furthermore, the course also gives students the opportunity to conduct independent research.
The knowledge gained in this course is directly applicable in central banks, financial regulation and international organizations such as IMF, World Bank, but it is also vital for business analysts in the financial industry.

Environmental and natural resource economics
