Mathematics and Statistics BSc (Hons)

3 years, starting in September 2025

Gain specialist knowledge in pure and applied mathematics with a particular focus on statistics.

Mathematics enables us to reason logically, to understand structure and formulate scientific principles. Statistics is the collection, analysis and interpretation of data central to everything from scientific progress to medical research and the work of government.

This course is for you if you would like to study statistics and have a significant interest in mathematics. You’ll be trained how to analyse problems and interpret patterns in data to make careful predictions about the future.

Unit options

At the start of the course, you’ll gain a broad education covering pure and applied mathematics, including programming and statistics. You’ll specialise later in the course with an emphasis on statistics and probability.

All of our courses are flexible and allow for a wide choice of units after year one. You may switch between Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics at any stage during year one, while switches to or from Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science can be done at the end of year one if you obtain a sufficiently high mark.

Supporting your studies

As a mathematics student here, you’ll have access to a wide range of support options, including tutorials, an academic advisor and the Mathematics Resources Centre (MASH) to assist with revision and coursework if you need it.

Put your learning into practice

Our academics carry out their own high-level research alongside teaching, so the latest developments always inform modules. Some units give you the opportunity to work alongside our academics and contribute to research in the Department.

Develop your professional skills

As well as developing your specific knowledge and skills base, your course will provide thorough training in transferable skills including reasoning, analytical thinking, problem-solving, research, teamwork, time management and planning. You'll also gain technical skills such as writing efficient computer programs and data analysis.

Specialist facilities

Students are supported by the Maths and Statistics Help (MASH) centre, which aids learning course content and supports the development of effective mathematics study skills. You may choose a final-year module with the opportunity to use our High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility.

Get ready for your future career

With a mix of technical and problem-solving skills, mathematicians are highly sought after in a wide variety of roles. For example, you could go on to work in the finance sector as an accountant, actuary or analyst, as a statistician in government or a teaching role. You could also go on to work as a data scientist or software developer in commerce or the technology sector.

Recent employers for our students include:

  • British Airways
  • Lloyds Banking Group
  • KPMG
  • Admiral
  • QinetiQ
  • Kobalt Music Group
  • Innocent Drinks

Many of our graduates also choose to go on to postgraduate study in preparation for academic or industry-based research careers.

2024/25 Academic Year

Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail.

We understand that you will want to know more about the shape of the academic year. We work hard and plan for different scenarios, to be able to welcome you to the University of Bath at the start of each semester.

Course structure

This course lasts 3 years. It starts in September 2025 and ends in 2028. Welcome week starts on 22 September 2025.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 120 credits (60 ECTS credits) in each academic year. Credits are usually split evenly across your two semesters of study. 120 credits (60 ECTS credits) are the equivalent of 1,200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

These lists are to give you an idea of some, but not all, of the learning and assessment methods used on this course. They are not exhaustive lists and methods are subject to change.

Learning and teaching

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which may be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 15 and 20 hours a week in your first year.

Our teaching for this course is delivered through in-person learning on campus, supported by high quality online provision. The significant majority of contact hours over the duration of your course will be in person, and this will be enhanced by some online delivery which will constitute a smaller proportion of these contact hours, depending on your programme of study, year of study and chosen optional units. This may be supplemented by additional activities such as a small number of online learning sessions (not live), skills development sessions, and personal tutorials.

The number of timetabled sessions on campus in later years may vary based on the options you choose, with a greater emphasis on independent learning. Project and dissertation units will generally have fewer scheduled sessions to allow you time for your independent work – this may also mean the number of hours of timetabled sessions each week will vary within a year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 15 – 20 hours per week in your first year, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing course working assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example in a final year project.

Assessment breakdown

You will be assessed by a range of methods designed to develop and test your skills and knowledge. These include closed-book examinations and coursework. The precise balance of assessment methods varies throughout your degree and depends on your choice of units – from 100% coursework assessment (e.g. for Applied Data Science) to 100% exam (for many units in pure mathematics).

You will primarily be assessed as an individual but in some units, may also be assessed as part of a group.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

You will develop core skills in applied mathematics, including statistics and computer programming. You will explore calculus in two and three dimensions and key mathematical methods for solving linear differential equations. Examples will be chosen from physics, engineering and other sciences. You will develop a solid foundation in probability theory leading to applications in statistics. You will learn Python programming, including the design and analysis of algorithms.

Applied mathematics 1B

15 credits

Study further techniques in applied mathematics, including statistics and computer programming. You will study probability theory for continuous random variables and explore statistical modelling and parameter estimation. You’ll learn about vectors, vector algebra and basic vector calculus in two- and three-dimensions, developing algebraic competency and geometric intuition. You will further your skills in Python programming and object-oriented design for the solution of mathematical problems.

Pure mathematics 1A

15 credits

You will develop core skills in pure mathematics. You will study algebra and build a firm grounding in the fundamental objects of mathematics such as sets, functions, numbers, polynomials and matrices. You will study analysis to define the notions of convergence and limit precisely. You will also develop the ability to reason logically and to read and write mathematics well.

Pure mathematics 1B

15 credits

You will develop further skills in pure mathematics. You will study linear algebra, both via matrices and via vector spaces and linear maps, focussing on the most widely applicable aspects. You will examine the theory of continuity, differentiation and integration for functions of one real variable. You will explore the beauty and the importance of university-level mathematics.

Statistics 2A

10 credits

This unit will develop your knowledge of statistical theory and your ability to apply statistical methods in analysing data. You will use the programming language R to fit models to data and you will develop the skills to interpret and use a fitted model.

Statistics 2B

5 credits

This unit will further develop your knowledge of statistical theory and its application in data analysis, with particular focus on the normal linear model.

Year 2 Options

45 credits

In the second year, you have core units to take in Statistics. You can also choose options in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, probability, numerical analysis, and machine learning. These choices span the full range of mathematics from pure mathematics to physical and computational applied mathematics to probabilistic modelling and data science. You can also take one option each semester in a related discipline such as physics or economics. You will receive guidance on choosing options and building a coherent selection of units.

Bayesian statistics

5 credits

You will learn the theory of Bayesian inference and apply Bayesian methods to a variety of statistical models and data types.

Medical statistics

5 credits

You will study the principles of randomisation and experimental design in the context of medical studies. You will learn how to analyse survival data subject to censoring, a common form of response variable in clinical trials.

Statistical modelling and data analytics 3A

10 credits

You will work with a class of statistical models known as generalised linear models. You will learn the theory of statistical inference for these models and carry out data analyses in case studies involving these types of data.

Statistical modelling and data analytics 3B

10 credits

You will learn about models for data with complex structures such as time series, spatial data, and linear models with random effects. You will develop skills in data analysis through case studies involving these types of data.

Final Year Options

30 credits

In the final year, you take compulsory units in statistics, including Medical and Bayesian statistics. You will also build on options from second year. Example options include Groups & their representations, Differential geometry of curves & surfaces, Introduction to topology, Functional analysis, Complex analysis, Discrete probability, Probability & finance, Mathematical biology, Mathematics of planet earth, Fluid dynamics, Numerical linear algebra, Inverse problems & numerical optimisation, Graph theory. You can also take some options in a related discipline such as education and management.
