Course descriptions

The Skills Centre is working with Signs4Life to provide a 10-week accredited British Sign Language (BSL) programme for students and staff.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand and use a limited range of simple education related words and sentences
  • take part in simple, everyday conversations
  • give and follow simple directions or instructions
  • give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions

In the final week of the course, you will enter for the BSL Level 1 Award which is assessed in class by the teacher-examiner. You will receive a certificate of achievement when you pass the exam.

Refresher sessions

Following the course, you will be able to access regular refresher programmes online throughout the year. You can use these to continue practising BSL to maintain your skills and knowledge.

There is no additional charge for these refresher sessions.

Course dates and times

The course consists of 3 hours of teaching per week over 10 weeks. All sessions will be delivered in person on campus by a Signs4Life Deaf tutor.

Enrolments are now closed.

Cost and enrolment

The fee for the course is £295. This covers teaching, examination fees, and refresher sessions throughout the year.

We do not want finance to be a barrier to your participation on this course. Please complete the BSL funded place application form to apply for a funded place if you are a University of Bath student:

  • in receipt of a Bath Bursary, or
  • from a household where the annual income is lower than £42,000

Whilst every effort is made to avoid changes to the programme, published details may be altered without notice at any time. We reserve the right to withdraw or amend any part of this programme without prior notice.
