Deposits for taught postgraduate courses

Find out about the deposit you might need to pay to secure your place on a master's course, including how much you need to pay and the payment deadline.


Terms And Conditions


If you receive an offer to study a master's course at Bath, you might need to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure your place.

We'll deduct the deposit from your tuition fee when you register to start your course with the University.

Courses that require a deposit

You need to pay a deposit when you accept an offer for any of our master's courses except:

  • MRes courses
  • integrated undergraduate master’s courses
  • online master’s courses
  • Degree Apprenticeship Programmes
  • Clinical Pharmacy Postgraduate Courses
  • PG Diploma and PG Certificate in Decarbonisation
  • MArch (Hons) Architecture
  • MA Education and PG Certificate in International Education
  • MSc Humanitarianism, Conflict and Development
  • MSc Public Policy
  • MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine and PG Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine
  • MSc Sports Physiotherapy
  • MSc Football Medicine in association with FIFA

Deposit amounts

You need to pay:

  • £1,000 deposit for Faculty of Engineering & Design, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science full-time courses
  • £500 deposit for Faculty of Engineering & Design, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science part-time courses
  • £1,500 deposit for School of Management master's courses
  • £3,750 deposit for the School of Management MBA

Payment deadline

You must pay your deposit no more than four weeks after you receive your offer letter.

If you pay your deposit after this time, we can withdraw your offer.

Payment method

You will need to pay your deposit at the same time as you reply to your offer on Application Tracker. Payment can be made via the University's approved payment provider, Flywire, by bank transfer or by the following methods for select locations:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • Alipay
  • Union Pay

Deposit waivers

We will waive the requirement to pay a deposit if you:

  • are dependent upon funding that is recognised by the University as appropriate funding for the purposes of study, like a Postgraduate Loan
  • have applied for or have been awarded a scholarship like a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship or a Chevening Scholarship
  • have applied or been awarded funding from a government or ministry
  • have applied for or have been awarded a University of Bath Sanctuary Scholarship or Warm Welcome Scholarship
  • you are a current student or graduate of the University of Bath

Extensions to deposit payment deadline

We may extend the deadline for you to pay a deposit, if you:

  • are waiting for a decision on your postgraduate application from another institution
  • are waiting for a decision on your application for a University of Bath scholarship

It may not be possible for us to approve an extension if there are no longer places available on the course you hold an offer for.

Requesting a deposit waiver or extension to the payment deadline

If you think you're eligible for a deposit waiver or extension to the payment deadline, email:

You must provide documentary evidence to show how you are eligible.

Waivers and extensions are given at the discretion of the School of Management or the Central Postgraduate Taught Admissions team and consideration will be given on a case-by-case basis.

Deposit refunds

The deposit is non-refundable unless you:

  • contact us during your right to cancel period, which is within 14 days of payment
  • fail to meet the conditions of your offer and can provide evidence of your attempt to meet the conditions, like an English language test taken since paying the deposit
  • have not been able to secure a visa due to circumstances beyond your control, such as visa processing delays

The deposit is also refundable if the University cancels the course that you have paid a deposit for.

We will not refund a deposit if:

  • you have provided information or documents in your application papers that are found not to be genuine, complete, or original
  • you change your mind about studying at Bath after your 14 day right to cancel period
  • the request is unreasonable or found not to be genuine
  • you are not issued with a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) in line with our Student visa CAS issuing procedure

Exceptional circumstances

The deposit may be refunded at the University's sole discretion in exceptional circumstances like:

  • a personal emergency, for example, if you or your dependent have a serious medical condition or in the event of a death in your immediate family
  • you're prevented from travelling to start your course due to restrictions in place in your country of residence or in the UK

Refunds are given at the discretion of the School of Management or the Central Postgraduate Taught Admissions team and consideration will be given on a case-by-case basis. Deposits will be refunded in the manner in which they were originally paid.
