Our governance structure is laid out in the University Charter, Statutes and Ordinances. It is comprised of three branches.

Policy

Our governance structure is laid out in the University Charter, Statutes and Ordinances. It is comprised of three branches:

Council

Council is the governing body of the University, established under Article 12 of the Charter. It is responsible for the management and administration of the University's property and revenue and, subject to the powers of Senate, has general control over the conduct of the affairs of the University.

Further information about Council and its committees can be found here

Senate

Senate is the supreme academic authority of the University, established under Article 13 of the Charter. It is responsible for the academic work of the University in both teaching and research, and for the regulation and superintendence of the education and discipline of the students.

Further information about Senate and its committees can be found here

Executive

The Executive is headed by the Vice-Chancellor, whose role is established under Article 7 of the Charter. Under section 5.4 of the Statutes, the Vice-Chancellor is given general responsibility to Council for the day-to-day running of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor is supported and advised in this work by a team of senior leaders who together form the University Executive Board. This is both an advisory and a decision-making body, although ultimately it is the Vice-Chancellor who is accountable for the decisions taken in this forum.

The Vice-Chancellor delegates authority for specific areas of work to members of the senior leadership team.
