Alun Griffiths Appointed by Council

Will undertake the responsibilities of members of governing bodies as set out in the CUC Guide for Members of Higher Education Governing Bodies in the UK.

Career

Alun has spent most of his career in the engineering consultancy industry in the UK and internationally and since retiring from his executive role has worked as a non-executive director on the Boards of several organisations.

His last executive role was as Group HR Director and main Board member for WS Atkins plc, then Europe’s largest engineering consultancy. In that role, he was responsible as employer for a workforce of 18,000 professional engineers, consultants, architects and scientists based in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the USA. He also held several senior business roles, including leading the management consultancy business and running a major JV in South Africa. He has worked on projects in more than 40 countries.

Since retiring from full-time work, he has worked on the boards of Severfield plc (as senior independent director), ISG plc, Anchor Trust, The Port of London Authority (as Vice Chair), Ramboll A/S (headquartered in Copenhagen) and the Remuneration Consultants Group. These organisations span a wide range of ownership models including stock-listed companies, a major charity, a Trust Port, Foundation Owned and a member-owned organisation. He has either chaired or been a member of the Remuneration Committee for all bar the last of these organisations.

He has a particular interest in organisation culture and performance and in linking an organisation’s strategy to its purpose. His interests include politics, sport and travel.
