This study is a pilot project funded by the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust to explore how people with learning disabilities are involved in the safeguarding process.
About the project:
People with learning disabilities are more likely than other members of the general public to experience abuse and neglect in their lifetime. It is, therefore, highly likely that social workers will encounter people with learning disabilities in their safeguarding work. However, from the existing research, we do not know to what extent people with learning disabilities and their carers are involved in the process and what strategies/interventions are used to support their involvement. This project will seek to address this research gap and develop safeguarding practice.
To help us explore this topic, the researchers will conduct a series of focus groups with professionals and interviews with people with learning disabilities and informal carers who have lived experience of the safeguarding process
