International Summer School

The Faculty of Science is excited to present a 9-day summer school opportunity for undergraduate students globally who are considering postgraduate taught or research degrees.


Our summer school programmes will immerse you in the finest aspects of our research, incorporating diverse and effective teaching methods drawn from our successful undergraduate courses. You'll have the opportunity to develop your skills in research, entrepreneurship and scientific communication while immersing yourself in British and international culture.

During the summer school, you will hear from world-leading experts and conduct experiments in our state-of-the-art laboratories. You will also have the opportunity to enhance your research skills with your peers, facilitated by our researchers.

This experience will provide a firm foundation for those interested in pursuing a master's or PhD degree in molecular biosciences, biotechnology or mathematical sciences at an international university.

Key information

  • Dates: 22 July – 31 July 2024
  • Cost: £1500 (including tuition fees, accommodation, main meals and scheduled social events).

There is no application deadline but the programme will close when we have reached capacity. Please apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You will receive a decision on your application within 7 working days of submitting your application and places will likely be filled by the end of May 2024.

Credits

The international summer school is worth 3 ECTS credits (6 CATS credits) in the UK system.

Please check with your home institution whether they would accept the credits for your module(s).

Visa requirements

Not all students require a visa to enter the UK. Check your eligibility.

If you need a visa, it will most likely be a Standard Visitor visa, allowing you to visit the UK for up to six months and undertake some study while here. If offered a summer school place, you will be supported to obtain a visa.

Eligibility

To apply for our international summer school, you should be:

  • 18 or over on the first day of the summer school programme.
  • A registered undergraduate student at a tertiary institution such as a university or college. Mature students, postgraduates and recent graduates are also welcome to apply.
  • Classified as an overseas student paying overseas fees.

Academic entry requirements

We require an overall percentage of 55% (British Lower Second Class) from your current undergraduate degree or international equivalent.

For our Maths, Machine Learning and Data Science summer school, you should have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree majoring in maths or statistics, and have an interim grade average of at least 55%.

Please note that these are entry requirements for our summer school, not our postgraduate taught courses. Entry requirements for postgraduate courses in the Faculty of Science can be found on course pages.

English language

If English is your second language, you should fulfil one of the following English language requirements:

  • Study at an institution where you are taught in English.
  • IELTS overall of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill.
  • English Language IGCSE/GCSE grade C/4.
  • India CBSE English Core Grade 12 with 70% overall.
  • Advanced Placements in English Language at Grade 2.
  • We may accept other forms of English language qualification.
