Eligibility to attend graduation ceremonies

Find out if you're eligible to attend a graduation ceremony

The University holds award ceremonies twice a year: once in the summer, and once in the winter.

You must have completed your studies and had your award approved by a Board of Studies in order to attend a ceremony.

Eligible awards

You may only attend an award ceremony if you are studying for an award which starts:

  • Foundation Degree
  • Bachelor
  • Master
  • Doctor

If you are aiming for an award listed above but instead are awarded a Certificate of Higher Education, Diploma of Higher Education, Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma, you will not be eligible to attend an award ceremony.

If you are studying on a course which is validated by the University, you will not be eligible to attend an award ceremony at the University.

Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate students

Invitations for the graduation ceremonies are sent to students who are on a eligible course (as mentioned above) approximately three months before the ceremonies are due to take place.

Postgraduate Research (Doctoral) students

Invitations for the graduation ceremonies are sent to students who are on a eligible course (as mentioned above) approximately three months before the ceremonies are due to take place.

For your final award to be recommended for approval at a Board of Studies (Doctoral) meeting, you must have done the following:

  • Had your final viva voce examination
  • If examiners recommend corrections to the thesis, these need to be approved by the Board of Studies (Doctoral)
  • Had any corrections specified by your examiners signed off by the relevant examiner(s)
  • Uploaded a final electronic version of your thesis to PURE
  • Completed and submitted an HD3 form to the Doctoral College
  • Submitted hardbound copies of your thesis to the Doctoral College offices in 10West or provided evidence to your Doctoral College programme administrator that your thesis has been submitted to Print Services for hard binding (a receipt from Print Services will suffice)

If any of these steps have not been completed by the date specified by the Doctoral College, you will not be eligible to attend a graduation ceremony.

Deferral

The University holds graduation ceremonies twice a year, in the summer and winter. If you’re unable to attend the ceremony session you've been invited to, you can choose to defer and request to attend a future ceremony session.
