Work experience at the University of Bath

Discover more about the range of work experience placements we have on offer.

We recognise that work experience is an important way to gain insights into the world of work. Time spent with an employer will broaden your knowledge of industries and sectors and can help inform and shape your future career decisions. It also offers a way in which to explore the workplace in a risk-free environment.

We also recognise the value providing work experience opportunities brings us as an employer, in benefitting from the unique skills and insights young people can bring. Our staff benefit from the opportunity to supervise and mentor, helping to develop their management and other professional and personal skills.

Work experience at Bath

Work experience is a short, unpaid placement where you can gain valuable experience of a working environment.

Our work experience opportunities enable students to develop employability skills for the future and provide an insight into our diverse range of career opportunities spanning education and research, management and professional services, operational, technical and campus services. You'll carry out appropriate activities under the supervision of a work experience supervisor who will be on hand to guide you during your time with us. We'll also help you think more strategically about your personal goals and purpose behind succeeding in your studies.

In order to provide as many opportunities as possible to the widest range of people, we offer short placements.

Who can apply for work experience at University of Bath

You can apply for work experience at Bath if you're aged between 14 and 18 in full time education, or your first year of college. You must obtain approval from your school or college to undertake this work experience as it falls within school/college term-time.

Due to high demand, we're only able to offer work experience if you live in the local catchment area. This includes Bath, Chippenham, Corsham, Melksham, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Westbury, Frome, Radstock, Keynsham, Brislington and surrounding villages.

As part of our ongoing commitment to increasing the diversity and social mobility of our students, we particularly encourage people from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply.

Restrictions on work experience

We now operate a central application process for work experience which is now the only way in which you can apply for work experience here.

We will only accept applications for work experience that are submitted using our online application form. Further details on how to apply can be found on this page.

Work experience can only take place if a supervisor or manager in the relevant department is available and has capacity to support the experience.

Our work experience programmes are designed to provide an insight into working at a university and are typically five days in duration. Shorter placements mean we can better match demand with the work experience opportunities available.

This programme does not support longer placements (for example an elective placement that lasts several weeks or months and is part of a university degree).
