The application process

The University will operate an application process for work experience, this is to enable us to offer a greater proportion of work experience placements and have resources in place to ensure we offer rewarding placements with adequate support.

We particularly encourage young people who are from disadvantaged backgrounds or under-represented groups to apply in line with the university's commitment to increasing the diversity and social mobility of our student and staff population.

To provide a fair opportunity for you to access work experience at the university, if you are interested in a work placement please select the opportunity of interest and   complete our online application form. As part of this you will be asked to indicate any preferential areas within your chosen career pathway (if available), providing an additional choice if desired (to enable us to support you in obtaining experience in an area that you are interested in).

The process of completing an application form is a great learning opportunity as it reflects that of applying for a job. You can view guidance to help you to complete a good quality application form on our help with applying web page

The application form

We believe it’s important our people can demonstrate skills which link to our core University values and therefore on the application form you have the opportunity to show us what skills you’ve already started developing through your education and outside interests. It’s also a chance for us to see where your skills could be developed through a work experience opportunity here.

Why not take a look at the questions we'll ask you and start to prepare.

The skills we're looking for:

  • A positive ‘can-do’ attitude
  • A creative thinker who considers new approaches
  • A good communicator who enjoys working as part of a team, sharing ideas and thinking
  • A commitment to your own development, to take something away from the experience

Our values:

  • Delivering quality and excellence, whilst being quick to listen and learn
  • Nurturing high aspirations, for the benefit of all
  • Aspiring to the highest standards of scientific, ethical and professional integrity, whilst supporting the freedom to challenge received wisdom
  • Supporting a sustainable community and adopting best environmental practice
  • Fostering inclusion, equality, diversity and accessibility where the unique value of each individual is recognised as we build a community of trust and care by treating each other with respect

The questions we'll ask you to answer:

  1. Tell us about your favourite piece of schoolwork or out of school project that you’ve completed. Why was this your favourite
  2. Tell us how you plan to get the most out of your work experience at the University
  3. Describe what role you like to play within a team
  4. Tell us how you have supported the environment either at school, at home, or elsewhere
  5. What qualities do you have that would make you a good representative for the University
