Description: Aims:
Students considering taking this option should have an interest in understanding the human immune system and its exploitation in the treatment of disease.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit you will be able to:
* Apply broad knowledge gained from current literature to discuss the innate, adaptive and inflammatory human defense mechanisms;
* Apply systematic understanding and a critical awareness of host defense responses to interpret clinical case studies;
* Present a research seminar critically evaluating the applications and implications of immunotherapeutic approaches in complex, incomplete or contradictory situations.

Content:
Topics include innate, adaptive and inflammatory immune system, molecular and cellular therapeutic targets underlying processes such as mast cell degranulation, apoptosis, chemotaxis, inflammation or inflammasome processing linked to respiratory, inflammatory and autoimmune disease states such as allergy, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma.
