Most University staff are employed on contracts which are terminable by notice – in other words staff have to submit a written resignation to terminate their employment. Others are engaged on a fixed-term basis, where the University has to go through a formal process to end the appointment.
The University is a dynamic organisation and is continually seeking to innovate and improve. From time to time it will need to disestablish posts, and in so doing it will seek to avoid compulsory redundancies wherever possible. If redundancies should occur, it will endeavour to handle them fairly, consistently and empathetically.
Occasionally staff may be dismissed from the University’s service, on disciplinary, health or capability grounds, and there are formal processes governing that too.
