This unit is for:

  • Those who work in the area of public policy and international development and who wish to know more, and reflect upon, the ethical underpinnings of policy decisions.
  • Postgraduate students in the social sciences who are interested in applied ethics in an international context.

The unit involves

  • An average of 5 hours of study a week (which includes a weekly study guide to complete and a one hour interactive weekly on-line seminar).
  • Writing a 2,500 word essay.

Unit content

  • To provide analytical tools to evaluate critically development issues from an ethical perspective.
  • To develop a critical awareness of the influence of values on public policy, democratic debate and international development.
  • To demonstrate the ethical underpinnings of public policy and to form a critical opinion about them.
  • To inform public action on the basis of informed and self-critical ethical judgments.
  • Topics covered:
    • Ethical reflection in international development
    • Utilitarianism
    • Aristotelian ethics
    • Kantian ethics
    • Political liberalism
    • Approaches to justice
    • Global justice
    • Feminist ethics
    • Environmental ethics

Qualifications

The unit carries 6 credits and can build towards a University of Bath degree qualification:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (30 credits)
  • Diploma (60 credits)
  • MSc (90 credits)
