This unit is for:

Professionals who work in the area of poverty and international development and who wish to have a broader understanding of the different theories and meanings of ‘development’.

The unit involves

  • An average of 5 hours of study a week (which includes a weekly study guide to complete and a one hour interactive weekly on-line seminar).
  • Writing a 2,500 word essay.

Unit content

  • To offer a comprehensive introduction to the historical emergence and evolution of international development as a project.
  • To familiarise with the major paradigms of thought within international development and consider how these paradigms have affected donor and government policies.
  • To critically analyse these paradigms and their influence on people’s lives.
  • Topics covered:
    • Colonialism and the making of the development project
    • Modernisation and dependency
    • State and market in global historical context
    • Basic needs and human development
    • Humanitarianism
    • Security
    • Indigenous knowledge and alternatives to development
    • Sustainability

Qualifications

The unit carries 6 credits and can build towards a University of Bath degree qualification:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (30 credits)
  • Diploma (60 credits)
  • MSc (90 credits)
