This unit is for:
Professionals who work in the area of poverty and international development and who wish to have a broader understanding of the different theories and meanings of ‘development’.
The unit involves
- An average of 5 hours of study a week (which includes a weekly study guide to complete and a one hour interactive weekly on-line seminar).
- Writing a 2,500 word essay.
Unit content
- To offer a comprehensive introduction to the historical emergence and evolution of international development as a project.
- To familiarise with the major paradigms of thought within international development and consider how these paradigms have affected donor and government policies.
- To critically analyse these paradigms and their influence on people’s lives.
- Topics covered:
- Colonialism and the making of the development project
- Modernisation and dependency
- State and market in global historical context
- Basic needs and human development
- Humanitarianism
- Security
- Indigenous knowledge and alternatives to development
- Sustainability
Qualifications
The unit carries 6 credits and can build towards a University of Bath degree qualification:
- Postgraduate Certificate (30 credits)
- Diploma (60 credits)
- MSc (90 credits)
