This unit is for:
- Those who work in the area of development and poverty reduction, in both developed and developing country contexts.
- PhD students who are conducting research in the area of wellbeing and human development.
The unit involves:
- An average of 5 hours of study a week (which includes a weekly study guide to complete and a one hour interactive weekly on-line seminar).
- Writing a 2,500 word essay.
Unit content
- To understand the different conceptualisations of human development and wellbeing and their history.
- To critically evaluate these concepts in relation to different social science disciplinary perspectives.
- To show a critical awareness of how concepts of wellbeing are understood in different cultural contexts and influence public policy.
- To synthesise and compare information from different disciplines and frame original arguments.

- Wellbeing in Policy
- Subjective and Objective Conceptions of Wellbeing
- Wellbeing Measures
- Wellbeing and Agency
- Relationships and the Environment
Qualifications
The unit carries 6 credits and can build towards a University of Bath degree qualification:
- Postgraduate Certificate (30 credits)
- Diploma (60 credits)
- MSc (90 credits)
