Wellbeing: Concepts, Measurement and Policy

This unit is for:

  • Those who work in the area of development and poverty reduction, in both developed and developing country contexts.
  • PhD students who are conducting research in the area of wellbeing and human development.

The unit involves:

  • An average of 5 hours of study a week (which includes a weekly study guide to complete and a one hour interactive weekly on-line seminar).
  • Writing a 2,500 word essay.

Unit content

  • To understand the different conceptualisations of human development and wellbeing and their history.
  • To critically evaluate these concepts in relation to different social science disciplinary perspectives.
  • To show a critical awareness of how concepts of wellbeing are understood in different cultural contexts and influence public policy.
  • To synthesise and compare information from different disciplines and frame original arguments.
  • Topics covered:
    • Wellbeing in Policy
    • Subjective and Objective Conceptions of Wellbeing
    • Wellbeing Measures
    • Wellbeing and Agency
    • Relationships and the Environment

Qualifications

The unit carries 6 credits and can build towards a University of Bath degree qualification:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (30 credits)
  • Diploma (60 credits)
  • MSc (90 credits)
