1. In outline

The format of University of Bath award certificates has recently been reviewed by the Registrar and a set of changes has been implemented with effect from the academic year 2004/05.

The purpose of the review was to update and simplify our certificates so that the text is unambiguous to a wide readership and the certificate can be easily authenticated and reproduced by the University in the long term.

It has been possible to introduce these changes following the introduction of transcripts and in anticipation of the diploma supplement. The level of detail that these documents contain means that we have been able to simplify the award certificate.

2. Changes in details

- Simplification and rationalisation of certificate text.

The wording of all certificates is now based on the following text:
" We hereby certify that X has been awarded the degree of Y".

- Inclusion of detailed table of Bath awards, FHEQ status and credit values on the reverse of certificate.

Following the introduction of the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ), a version of the table of awards from QA3 now appears on the reverse of each certificate.

- Removal of placement footnotes from face of certificate.

With the introduction of transcripts and the diploma supplement, it is no longer necessary to include this level of detail on the certificate.

- Signatory change

The signature of the Dean of Faculty has replaced that of the Head of Department.

- Representation of joint awards, validations and franchises.

Where an award is validated by the University of Bath for another institution there will be a footnote on the face of the certificate.
For collaborative awards where the partner institution has no awarding powers, the details of this collaboration will not appear on the certificate but be shown on a transcript.
For joint awards, i.e. where the partner institution(s) has awarding powers, the appearance of the certificate will be determined in consultation with the partner(s) but without compromising the certificate security features shown below.

3. Key features of award certificates

- Paper

University of Bath certificates are printed on hand-made paper. For this reason there may be small variations in the tone and thickness of the paper.

- Crest

The University Crest appears in the top right-hand corner of the certificate.
Detailed arrangements for joint awards are currently being reviewed.

- Water-mark and seal

The water-mark appears on the bottom left-hand corner of the certificate and the University seal on bottom right-hand corner.

- FHEQ table

All courses which fall within the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications are listed in a table which appears on the reverse of certificates for awards which fall within the framework.

- Signatories

Each certificate will bear the signatures of the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar and the Dean of Faculty/Head of School.
Detailed arrangements for joint awards are currently being reviewed.
