Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage city with historic streets not designed for heavy traffic, and limited parking.

Road traffic accounts for an estimated 92% of nitrogen oxide emissions in the Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) and transport generates roughly 29% of the region's total carbon emissions, contributing directly to climate change, B&NES Transport fast facts.

To support sustainable travel, please do not bring a personal motor vehicle to Bath. Access to campus is by bus, cycle, walking or scooter. Personal motor vehicle parking is only permitted in exceptional circumstances.

Buses to campus

Most students get to campus by bus with multiple options including the UniBus services from First Bus, and the U20 from The Big Lemon.

Discounted student tickets are available within Bath and the wider area, for multiple operators, as well as multi-day bundles, and weekly/monthly/annual tickets.

The buses run up to every 5–10 minutes at peak times during term time.

Cycling to campus

Cycling around Bath is popular - especially with e‑bikes. On campus you’ll find:

  • secure cycle parking
  • shower and locker facilities in some buildings.

If you live in Oldfield Park or the city centre, cycling can be faster than the bus at peak times.

Walking to campus

If you live in Oldfield Park, Widcombe, or the city centre, the walk to campus is steep but scenic and takes around 30–40 minutes. In our last survey, 18% of students said they walk to campus, getting health benefits and saving money.

Riding an e-bike or e-scooter to campus

In Bath you can rent e-scooters and e-bikes operated by Dott. Dott offers a 35% discount on every journey for students at Bath. Dott also has a range of passes, including discounts for multiple rides in a day, unlimited free unlocks, and 30 days of unlimited rides at a reduced rate.

In our last survey, 5% of students said they cycle or scoot to campus. On a Dott e-bike or e-scooter:

  • the journey may be faster than on a bus
  • you don’t have to carry a lock for your own bike
  • if you have a steep hill on your journey, riding is easier than on a traditional bike
  • you get some exercise and wellbeing benefits.

Personal motor vehicle

If you live in University accommodation, on or off campus, you may not park a motor vehicle, including a motorcycle, on University property unless you hold an Exceptional Circumstances Permit. Parking is also not permitted on any public road within the City of Bath.

If you’re an undergraduate or taught postgraduate student living in private accommodation in BA1 or BA2 postcodes you may not park a motor vehicle, including a motorcycle, on University property unless you hold an Exceptional Circumstances Permit.

If you have a Blue Badge you can register for an Exempt Parking Permit.

There is no on‑street parking near campus, surrounding roads are double‑yellow lines or resident‑permit only.

ANPR (automatic number plate recognition)

We have installed ANPR cameras on our Claverton Down campus car parks, to enforce the parking regulations. If you park without a permit you’ll receive a penalty charge.

If you need to drop off or pick up something from campus, such as large equipment, vehicles are allowed up to one hour on campus without being charged. This allowance is for one visit within a day. If you enter campus again later the same day to pick up or drop off you will need to pay for an hour of Visitor Parking via JustPark. This will be monitored by ANPR.
