How we are Governed
Our governance structure is laid out in the University Charter, Statutes and Ordinances. It is comprised of three branches, Council, Senate and the University Executive Board.
Council
As the governing body of the University, Council have general oversight over the institution and its affairs.
Council comprises 18 members, with a lay majority who come from outside the University, bringing skills and experience from other sectors. The Vice-Chancellor is also a member of Council, as are members of University staff and two elected officers from the Students' Union.
Senate
Senate is responsible for regulating and directing the academic work of the University.
Senate's membership and duties are detailed in Sections 18 and 19 of the Statutes. They are responsible for the academic work of the University, consistent with Article 13 of the Charter, and in particular for the strategic development of the academic activities of the University and for the approval of policies.
Sub Committees
Council, Senate and UEB are supported by a number of subcommittees.
Sub Committees consider and deliver more detailed work on executive, support, resource and academic matters. Some are statutory committees which are required to ensure the University is legally compliant.
University Executive Board
The University Executive Board is an advisory body to the Vice-Chancellor and President
The University Executive Board (UEB) advises and supports the Vice-Chancellor and President in the discharge of their responsibility to Council for maintaining and promoting the good order of the University.
Court
Court represent the University's constituencies, and can make representations to Council on any matter affecting the University.
Court is established under clause 10 of the University Charter. Its membership is determined by the provisions of section 13 of the University Statutes, Ordinance 6 and the Framework for Elections and Appointments to Court. The procedures at Court are set out in its Standing Orders.
