Course overview

A course for staff considering retiring in the next 2 years to support you to prepare for the future.


2022/2023 course: This course runs once a year.

This course will be delivered on campus as an in-person event.

By listening to expert speakers and through informal discussion, this course aims to give staff considering retirement an opportunity to prepare themselves for their future, so that their new life may be approached with confidence and enthusiasm.

The course includes the following:

  • The theme of retirement
  • Wills, trusts
  • State benefits
  • Your university pension scheme
  • Financial planning
  • Investments
  • Good health

Morning session focuses on planning your finances for retirement. There will be an overview of your LGPS & USS occupational pension and the changes to this scheme.

Planned Future will help you understand the different types of pension plans you may have and relevant taxes; they share planning tips for retirement and beyond; and look at the importance of Wills and Power of Attorney. In addition the opportunity to look at investments and the role of risk in combating inflation, and making your money last for your lifetime.

Afternoon session is focused on helping you make the most of your freedom in retirement. With focus on the social and emotional impacts rather than the financial.

Presenters: The course is led by Planned Future and there will also be a representative of the University's Pension team.

Free consultation

Planned Future offer all members of staff who attend the course a free 90 minute consultation (optional) regarding financial matters, such as matters involving retirement, redundancy, wills and lasting power of attorney (inheritance tax). The 1:1 consultation may be requested at a later date, there is no time period in place, when taking up the opportunity.

Planned Future is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority as Independent Financial Advisers with sister company Chadwicks IFA. Since they are independent, they are able to advise upon the widest possible range of products available from different companies. Any advice given will be generic in nature and not focused on any one company, participants are under no obligation to follow up any of the advice.

Discussing your learning and development with your line manager

We assume that if you need permission or agreement to attend this course you will have arranged this before booking, and have also jointly discussed the following with your line manager to ensure that the training is suitable and your learning can be transferred back to the workplace:

  • how this training will help to deliver your individual/team goals
  • the expected outcomes (i.e. what is expected to change/improve as a result)
  • any support required post-course to enable you to transfer your learning back to the workplace

Your manager will receive an automated notification when you book or cancel a place on a course using ESS.
