Description: Aims:
To introduce students to further concepts of genomics relevant to transcriptomics and proteomics.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Explain how whole genome transcriptome information is generated and analysed
* Explain the type of biological information that is contained in genome level gene expression profiles
* Relate gene expression profiles to the basic mechanisms of regulating gene expression
* Explain how gene expression profiling can be used to investigate some disease processes.

Skills:
Knowledge and understanding T/F/A, Intellectual skills F/A, Written communication T/F/A, Numeracy F/A, Data acquisition, handling, and analysis T/F/A, Information technology T/F, Working independently T/F

Content:
Genome wide assessment of gene expression; Comparison of transcriptome data to identify aberrant gene expression patterns of genes and/or pathways in disease states; Comparative genomics combined with transcriptomics to gain insights into the molecular basis of clinically-relevant traits; Proteomics, structural genomics, protein disorder; Gene co-expression and protein-protein networks as means to identify functional interactions among genes; Epigenetics and disease, imprinting and genome-wide assessments of epigenetic markers; Applications of genomics analyses and ethical considerations: Legal applications, pharmacogenomics (diagnostic tools and treatment development), GM crops, etc.
