Description: Aims:
To provide an introduction to the chemistry of some modern materials and how technological applications drive development of new materials.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying this unit the student should be able to:
* Compare and contrast methods for synthesising nanoparticles and applications of nanophase materials;
* Give examples of templating methods for hierarchical structures and surface patterning and applications of these materials;
* Explain how the structure of polymeric materials such as block copolymers influences their properties;
* Describe methods for the preparation of functional polymers and how the methods determine the properties of the materials.

Skills:
Data analysis (T, F, A), critical thinking (F, A), problem solving (F, A).

Content:
Nanoparticle synthesis, applications of nanoparticles, templated hierarchical structures, applications of hierarchical materials, solid state inorganic materials. Preparative and analytical methods for copolymers with varying structures, control of material properties by structural variation with examples (e.g. delivery, photoresists).
