Description: | Aims: To introduce the theory and practice of digital signal and audio processing. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit students should be able to: Understand digital audio signals and sample rate conversion; describe digital filter types and their implementations; perform digital signal processing operations in the time and frequency domain; understand the concepts of autocorrelation and cross-correlation functions and power spectral density estimation; understand Wiener filtering and the LMS algorithm; apply adaptive signal processing to noise cancellation and equalisation; understand psycho-acoustic models and their application to audio compression; understand the implementation of video coding and MPEG standards. Skills: Theory and analysis of current techniques in digital signal and audio processing taught facilitated and tested. Content: Overview of signal theory: Practical implementations of finite impulse response and infinite impulse response filters. Spectral analysis using the short term Fourier transform. Windowing and spectral leakage. Quantisation, sampling and sample rate conversion. Human Auditory Perception: temporal and frequency masking, critical bands. Speech and audio signals. Autocorrelation and cross-correlation functions. Power spectral density estimation. Adaptive signal processing: Wiener filtering, method of steepest descent, LMS algorithm, properties and applications. Compression methods for speech and music. Source encoding: MPEG-2/4 video and audio. MPEG data. |
