Aims: The aim of this unit is to introduce and facilitate a foundational understanding of knowledge, ethics, and communication in sport and sport research, and to encourage reflection amongst students on their own values as they pertain to sport and related concepts (e.g., physical activity).
Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify and explain key concepts for undergraduate studies in sport management and coaching
2. Select, describe, and make use of ideas from reputable academic (e.g., scholarly journals) and non-academic (e.g., third sector organisations) sources that are relevant to sport and the social sciences in group and independent research activities
3. Communicate key issues, theories, principles, perspectives, and ethics relevant to studying sport to intended audiences using appropriate technologies
4. Identify and make use of relevant team-working skills to tackle and present a group research activity on knowledge and ethics and the nature of sport
5. Recognise and discuss problems and challenges related to knowledge, ethics, and communication in sport science, and identify solutions individually and as part of a team.
6. Explain the positive and negative role played by sport in society.
Skills: Effectively manage time, resources, responsibilities, and changing contexts to meet personal goals and course requirements.
Take initiative in identifying problems and formulating solutions.
Effectively utilise contemporary information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Reflect on and constructively utilise feedback to facilitate learning.
Demonstrate awareness of employment pathways and opportunities relevant to the course.
Content: Sport science and social science disciplines; foundations of knowledge (e.g., epistemology, ontology, theory, method); ethics and theory (e.g., deontology, consequentialism, virtue ethics); case studies in ethics in sport; good practice in communication; logic and argumentation (e.g., logical fallacies); study skills; the nature of sport and related concepts (e.g., physical activity, health, exercise, physical culture); sport-related careers.
