Description: Aims:
To develop understanding of the socially constructed concepts of health and physical activity within contemporary society.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
* Critically evaluate the discursive constitution of (un)healthy & (in)active bodies
* Critically appraise knowledge on the impact of commercialism and the media on the image of the fit/fat body
* Understand how the body, health care technologies and health care settings are variously conceptualized, represented and/or constituted

Content:
In applying socio/psychological theoretical knowledge to the practices of health and physical activity, students will critically engage with the discursive construction of the physically active bodyaround the following key topics:
* Moral Panic and contemporary health problems,
* The discursive constitution of the (un)healthy and (in)active body
* Health, the body and Schooling
* Public pedagogies and mediatised health
* Disordered and (dis)abled bodies, Engagement with broader cultural artefacts such as art, literature, film, cyberculture will be encouraged to augment learning.
