This unit is only available to students entering programmes in Computer Science, Electronic & Electrical Engineering or Sport & Exercise Science with a BTEC or Access qualification and without A level Mathematics.
Description: Aims:
To prepare students for the mathematics used in the first year of their degree programme.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit students will be able to:
1. Fluently use key techniques from GCSE and A level mathematics
2. Approach the study of abstract mathematics with greater confidence
3. Use an appropriate range of study strategies for mathematics modules
4. Tackle time-restricted assessment tasks such as examinations with greater confidence.

Skills:
Application of mathematical techniques
Problem solving using mathematics
Study skills for mathematics and examination techniques.

Content:
Students cover topics from the core GCSE and A level mathematics syllabus. The topics are selected from those listed below depending on the individual experience and requirements of the student. Delivery includes use of online resources and class time for follow up:
* Arithmetic: expanding arithmetic expressions, fractions and percentages
* Algebra: indices, logarithms, expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, algebraic fractions, transposition of equations, solving linear, quadratic, simultaneous equations and inequalities
* Functions: characterising and sketching functions, composition, inversion, important examples of functions
* Trigonometry: solution of triangles, trigonometric functions and identities
* Calculus: topics in differentiation and integration
Class time considers examples using the above mathematical topics with a view to:
* Improving fluency, study strategies and examination preparation for mathematics modules.
