Description: Aims:
The ability to commercialise technology, to develop an inventive idea into a business concept and eventually into a marketable product, is a crucial skill for individuals and organisations. This course aims to equip students with the techniques and tools necessary to understand and analyse the different pathways that can be used for new technologies to be effectively commercialised.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course students will be able to:
* discuss the range of mechanisms through which different technologies can generate commercial value
* describe the role of intellectual property in determining appropriate commercialisation strategies
* compare and evaluate tools for understanding for new markets and how to operate in markets for technology
* develop and assess strategies to effectively bring new technologies to markets.

* the facility to apply subject-specific knowledge into a range of complex situations, taking into account the overall implications for the other areas of the business (T/F/A)
* a critical awareness of current issues and frameworks in commercialisation of new technologies (T/F/A)
* the ability to acquire and analyse data, information and situations, to evaluate their relevance and validity, and to synthesise them in the context of topical business problems (F, A).

* evaluate the potential range of, and practically contribute to, various technology commercialisation strategies (T, F)

The ability to realise meaningful commercial value from new technologies is a core source of advantage for individual entrepreneurs, organisations and national/regional economies. This module serves as a practical introduction to key commercialisation concepts and tools, equipping students with an understanding and appreciation of the potential pathways for new technologies to create value. Students will consider a range of strategic issues in the commercialisation of technology, as well as the practical challenges of understanding and developing markets for these new technologies.
