Academic Year: 2021/2
Owning Department/School: Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering
Credits: 12 [equivalent to 24 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 240
Level: Intermediate (FHEQ level 5)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CW 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Concrete Design (CW 35%)
  • Steel Design (CW 35%)
  • Timber Design (CW 20%)
  • Masonry Design (CW 10%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites:
Aims: To introduce students to the concepts of limit state design and its practical application to a variety of construction materials, including reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, steel, timber and masonry. To further enable students to integrate analytical and conceptual understanding of structural action with material selection through producing creative and competent designs.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
* Demonstrate their understanding on the knowledge and the concepts of limit state design in the design procedure
* Integrating material selection in the design procedure
* Producing a design scheme to implement their analytical and conceptual understandings of structural design, explain their material selection, and analyse the benefit and/or limitation of the construction technology in the scheme.

Skills: Intellectual skills
* To understand taught material - taught
Professional/Practical skills
* Analytical and design skills related to the material covered - assessed
Transferable/key skills
* To communicate ideas verbally and in writing - assessed.

Content: General part:
Design philosophies (Geometrical principles; Permissible stress; LFRD; Limit state). Codes of Practice, Standards, Euro-codes. Design loads and actions.
2. Material specific:
Reinforced and prestressed concrete - materials; singly and double reinforced beams; serviceability; Reinforced column; detailing of reinforcement; fire resistance; two way span slabs; flat slabs. derivation of losses, elastic and ultimate analysis, partial prestressing, load balancing; shear and end blocks; bursting.
Structural steel design - steel sections; materials; simple tension members; simple compression members; beam design; bolted and welded connections.
Structural timber - materials (grading, species); tension; compression; bending; connections.
Structural unreinforced masonry - materials; compression; bending; shear.
