Description: | Aims: To develop an in depth understanding of autonomous systems in the context of robotics. This unit will develop the students' theoretical and practical knowledge of robotic autonomy, including elements of perception, decision making and adaptability in the context of complex uncertain environments. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student should be able to: * Identify the sources and nature of the complexity faced by the autonomous system in their context; * Identify and minimise perception and actuation uncertainty of the system in the environmental context proposed; * Use suitable programming tools and frameworks for the development of successful autonomous robots; * Identify and propose suitable sensors and actuators for a robotic system; * Identify the requirement for system adaptability and propose possible solutions. Skills: * Robotics programming [T/A] * Autonomous system design [T/A] * Present technical information in a written form [T/A] * Problem solving [T/A] * Ability to apply the concepts and principles of robotics and electronic engineering science to the solution of engineering problems [T/A] * Working independently [T/A]. Content: The unit will include the problems faced by autonomous robotic systems in complex real-world domains, these will be derived from current state-of-art research in robotics. The subjects of uncertainty in sensory and actuator systems and how this can be captured using suitable techniques. Specialised programming frameworks for robotic systems will be introduced. |
