Aims: To examine physical activity and sedentary behaviours across the lifespan and how they relate to health. To explore the evidence underpinning physical activity guidelines and sedentary behaviour recommendations for different age groups. To understand how physical activity interventions have been designed and implemented for different contexts and populations.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe and discuss the physical activity guidelines for different stages of the life course
  2. Explain how relevant study designs and intervention protocols have been used to promote physical activity across the lifespan
  3. Apply knowledge of the physical activity guidelines and intervention literature to solve public health challenges
  4. Develop coherent arguments and challenge assumptions related to physical activity literature
  5. Explain and discuss the challenges associated with promoting physical activity across the lifespan

This unit will introduce students to the current physical activity guidelines for each age group, alongside key physical activity interventions for the different age groups and across various contexts.

Students will also learn about the sedentary behaviour recommendations and interventions across the lifespan.

The unit will provide students with an understanding of the health benefits of physical activity, current levels of physical activity participation, as well as an overview of the evidence base and methods that have been undertaken to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour across the lifespan.
