Requisites:
Aims: This unit aims to develop theoretical and clinical knowledge of athlete and injury management in the sporting context, enabling appreciation and understanding of complex clinical scenarios.
This includes adopting multi-professional, evidence based approach to injury management and intervention programmes, based on ongoing assessment and interpretation.

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Synthesise information from examination strategies including clinical tests, performance-related tests and medical investigations to formulate an initial diagnosis of the type and severity of injury or illness
2. Design and implement evidence based intervention programs to promote early and safe return to activity and progression to optimal function following injury.
3. Critically evaluate the scope of practice and expertise of other professionals, leading to appropriate referral and communication of information
4. Design and apply evidence based interventions to prevent injury and enhance performance
5. Evaluate progress and outcomes of intervention programs in relation to sport and exercise activities, including reviewed advice to the athlete and other professionals
6. Critically appraise the literature supporting methods of assessment and management.

Content: This module addresses the prevention, diagnosis and management of the sporting spine and spine related-injury from a Sports Physiotherapy perspective, incorporating multidisciplinary practice.
Principles of history gathering, physical examination, differential diagnoses and rehabilitation to maximise performance, integrated with physiology, patho-physiology, interdisciplinary practice, medical imaging, motion analysis.
There is a particular focus on problem solving and clinical reasoning, and exploring the existing evidence to support management approaches.
Topic areas within each section will be applied to different clinical and athletic scenarios, demonstrating an iterative assessment / reasoning / evaluation approach to athlete management.
