Requisites: Before taking this module you must take HL10524 AND take HL10525
Aims: To examine the psychological and social factors that contribute towards participation in sport and exercise.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Explain and analyse the psychological determinants and outcomes of exercise and physical activity participation, incorporating psychological theory;
  2. Explain and analyse the sports environment and team dynamics;
  3. Work independently to interpret empirical research in sport and exercise psychology, and apply to case study examples;
  4. Analyse the role of the sport psychologist in the provision of interventions, including ethical and respectful working practices;
  5. Conduct psychometric analysis and interpretation of questionnaires to address psychological and social factors in sport and exercise science;
  6. Explain and discuss concepts from sport and exercise psychology, communicating to both academic and public audiences.


Content:

Semester one will cover a range of topics related to the psychology of exercise, including: theories of behavioural change, the psychological benefits (emotional and cognitive) and risks of exercise, the societal benefits of sport participation, and the psychological and social factors that underpin exercise promotion.

Semester two will include topics related towards psychological and social factors that contribute towards successful performance and positive development in sports. It will cover a range of topics including group dynamics, the sport environment, personality and individual differences, and positive development in youth sports.
