Requisites: Before taking this module you are advised to take ED20450 OR take HL20450
Aims: The unit aims to examine the theoretical basis of professional coaching, including generic coaching and educational principles, legal, moral and ethical responsibilities, current initiatives, employment issues, provision, techniques, and support systems. Contemporary ideas and problems relevant to the professional coach will be evaluated. Students can undertake a placement shadowing and assisting a professional coach in order to fully appreciate the practical demands within the vocation. Students will continually be asked to challenge their taken-for-granted assumptions about sports coaching.

Learning Outcomes: Students completing this unit will understand the role of the professional coach in the development of sport at all levels of participation. They will be able to appreciate both theoretical and practical issues underpinning sports coaching. Students will be able to discuss and critically analyse contemporary ideas relevant to the sports coach. They will appreciate the 'real-world' demands of professional coaching. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of contemporary methods of enquiry in the field of sports coaching.

* The context of scholarly enquiry in the field of sports coaching.
* The challenges facing scholars in the sports coaching research field.
* Sports coaching as a physical pedagogic approach.
* The theoretical basis of professional coaching - generic coaching, educational principles, legal, moral and ethical responsibilities.
* Current coaching initiatives, employment issues, and support systems.
* Contemporary ideas and problems relevant to the professional coach.
