Aims: To deepen students' understanding of determinants of health and to engage them in debates about how public health can be delivered in an unequal globalised world.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate:
* Systematic understanding and a detailed knowledge of contemporary challenges in public health, such as the growth of non-communicable diseases and the difficulties of governing health in a globalised world.
* Systematic understanding of population health intervention options for tackling non-communicable diseases.
* Systematic understanding of health governance models and of the relative and dynamic power of structure and agency in shaping health, health policy and health inequalities.
* Ability to develop and sustain coherent and considered arguments regarding the relationship between structure and agency and public health outcomes, which engage effectively with the literature.

Content: The nature of non-communicable disease and its impact on morbidity, mortality and health inequalities; Structural determinants of health, such as globalisation and the free market, and its impact on health, health policy making and widening health inequalities; The role of agency in determining health, focusing on the role of actors as vectors of health in a globalised world (the state, international organisations, corporations, non-governmental organisations, advocates, individuals), their relative power and impact on physical and mental health and wellbeing; The role of consumer products and services and their corporate providers as determinants of health. 4 case studies, which might include topics such as physical activity, physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour, overweight and obesity, diet, tobacco or alcohol - will enable students to apply theoretical ideas discussed in the course; Normative aspects of policy and empirical options for tackling non-communicable disease and associated inequalities through whole population or targeted interventions; The process of health policymaking and the role played by science and evidence.
