Course (CRS) codes

This page provides information on course codes as seen in the Course & Unit Catalogues.

Factsheet

The code for your course, as seen in the Course & Unit Catalogues, is the course (CRS) code. The CRS bit distinguishes it from other related codes in our student administration system, SAMIS. The course (CRS) codes assigned to courses are made up of 10 alphanumeric characters (e.g. USCH-AFB01) in the following manner:

  • ECTS course codes have 10 alphanumeric characters
  • CATS course codes have 12 alphanumeric characters

Position 1: Study Level code

The Study Level code is the 1st of the alphanumeric characters and indicates, for example, the difference between undergraduate and postgraduate taught provision.

Value Definition
N Non-HE courses
R Postgraduate research
T Postgraduate taught
U Undergraduate

Position 2: Faculty code

The Faculty code is the 2nd of the alphanumeric characters and indicates the Faculty or School within which the course is offered; can cover more than one Faculty.

Value Definition
E Faculty of Engineering & Design
H Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences
M School of Management
S Faculty of Science
X Cross-faculty (split over more than one faculty)

Positions 3 & 4: Department code

The Department code comprises the 3rd and 4th of the 10 alphanumeric characters and identifies the Department owning a course.

Values Definition

ME Mechanical Engineering
MN School of Management
PH Physics
PL Politics, Languages & International Studies, Department of
PS Psychology
SL Life Sciences
SP Social & Policy Sciences
XX Cross-department

Position 5: Hyphen

The Hyphen is the 5th of the alphanumeric characters and it is used to separate the course (CRS) code into two parts using a /-/

Position 6: Site code

The Site code is the 6th of the alphanumeric characters and indicates the location that the course is being delivered.

Values Definition
A Bath main campus
P University of Plymouth
U Royal Academy of Dance
V Online masters courses

Position 7: Mode of Study code

The Mode of Study code is the 7th of the alphanumeric characters and indicates the way the course is studied.

Values Definition
A Incorporating a study year abroad (for pre-CT courses)
C Incorporating a combined placement year (work and study abroad) (for pre-CT courses)
D Distance learning
F Full-time
K Thick sandwich (incorporating a whole year placement or study year abroad)

Position 8: Qualification Aim code

The Qualification Aim code is the 8th of the alphanumeric characters and indicates the general type of qualification that the course offers.

Values Definition
B Bachelor, e.g., BA, BSc, BEng
C Certificate (undergraduate or postgraduate)
D Doctorate, e.g., PhD, EdD, MD, DBA, MPhil with progression to PhD
F Foundation Degree
H HNC, HND
L Diploma (undergraduate or postgraduate)
M Master (first degree, or postgraduate), e.g., MA, MSc, MBA, MPhil only, MEng, MBiochem, MMath
N No qualification aimed for
S Higher Doctorate, e.g., DSc, DLitt
T Credit (undergraduate or postgraduate), e.g., for continuing professional development and visiting/exchange students

Positions 9 & 10: Numeric identified (ECTS)

For ECTS courses, the Numeric identifier comprise the 9th and 10th of the alphanumeric characters and it is used to identify particular courses within a group that otherwise has common characteristics; each individual course would be associated with its own particular name.

This element should be assumed to have no intrinsic significance. Within the group of courses which have the following common characteristics, for example:

Undergraduate; Faculty of Science; Department of Mathematical Sciences; Bath main campus; Full-time; Bachelor-aiming (USMA-AFB...)

The number at the end only serves to separate different individual courses.

Positions 9 & 10 & 11 & 12: Numeric identified (CATS)

For CATS courses, the numeric identifier comprise the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th of the 12 alphanumeric characters and it is used to identify particular courses within a group that otherwise has common characteristics; each individual course would be associated with its own particular name.

This element should be assumed to have no intrinsic significance. Within the group of courses which have the following common characteristics, for example:

Postgraduate taught; Faculty of Science; Department of Computer Science; Online masters course; Distance learning; Masters-aiming (TSCM-VDM...)

The number at the end only serves to separate different individual courses.
