Innovation and Technology Management MSc

1 year, starting in September 2024

Develop knowledge and skills to lead innovative development projects. Gain hands-on experience of creativity tools, technology management and commercialisation.

This course is designed for engineering, management or science graduates who want to develop their innovation and technological/engineering expertise.

You’ll learn about managing technology and innovation in rapidly evolving global organisations. You will also develop project management, strategic management and commercialisation skills.

This is not a typical technology degree: we bridge the gap between management and technology/engineering. Two of Bath’s top departments, the School of Management and the Faculty of Engineering & Design, deliver this course.

You'll explore the contemporary issues that occur when management and engineering meet. A focus on leadership and professional skills will help you graduate prepared for a range of careers.

Learn in an international and interdisciplinary environment of academics, students and industry contacts. Our students come from all over the world. Their backgrounds include degrees in mechanical and chemical engineering, computer science, economics and social science.

Key benefits

  • Focus on innovation: learn to do things differently to improve results, drive important change and support the environment.
  • Graduate prepared to become a leader in your chosen field. Our graduates work in areas like consultancy, project management and governmental innovation programmes.
  • Put what you learn into practice through individual and group projects, including the option to work on a real industrial problem for your summer project.

Highly-ranked

We're ranked Top 50 in Western Europe and 3rd in the UK in the Eduniversal Innovation and Project Management ranking 2021.

You may also want to look at our related MSc in Engineering Business Management.

We give you the edge

We combine the latest research with many opportunities to apply it. This will help you stand out from the crowd. You'll develop key professional skills and work with our partner organisations on optional projects from day one. Find out more about optional activities.

Our graduates have a great employment record. Most go on to careers in a range of areas, start their own business or begin a PhD. Find out more about how we prepare you for career success.

Our new building encourages engagement with other students and academics. A dedicated Employment Hub provides a space for you to meet and network with our industry partners.

Learning and teaching

You will learn from staff with backgrounds and expertise in relevant areas of management, engineering and technology. This course has been designed holistically ensuring the available units complement each other to meet its overall aims.

Learning and teaching

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. You will be expected to work on your own and as part of a group.

Contact hours

Class contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, and tutorials, vary throughout your course but are typically 10–16 hours a week during the taught semesters.

Additional briefing sessions will be provided to help you prepare for the summer project and as part of the co-curricular offering of live projects (see more below). You will receive direct guidance from an allocated member of academic staff for your summer project activity.

Independent learning

As well as timetabled contact hours, you're expected to undertake independent learning and assessment. Typically, this might be around 25 - 30 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework, presentations, or revising for exams.

Assessment breakdown

You will experience a broad balance between different forms of assessment: individual and group assignments, as well as examinations. The work required may include written submissions, live presentations and recorded videos. Assessment on the course has been designed to support your professional development in important business and practical skills.

The final degree grade is determined by a weighted average of the taught semesters (two thirds) and the summer project activity (one third).

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities. Take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.
